Day 20

Only ten more days until the end. It looks like I’m going to make it again this year. Glad to see you’re staying with me! Today’s poem was inspired by an article I was reading about Elizabeth Warren, and whether sexism had impacted her campaign. The final paragraph was concluding that, while it might have had some impact, the problem wasn’t sexism. It was that she was just too darn educated for the average Democratic primary voter. She was haughty, and a scold. So someone decided to make the point that it wasn’t sexism by using…sexist language. So I wrote tonight’s poem. Oh, and by the way, Elizabeth Warren is neither haughty nor a scold; Bernie Sanders could rightly be called a scold, and yet no one is calling him out on that. I wonder why that is? Just kidding. I don’t really wonder.

Five awesome women:

  • Gertrude Ederle, first woman to swim across the English channel

  • Billie Jean King, tennis star

  • Kathrine Switzer, first woman to run the Boston marathon

  • Bertha von Suttner, first woman to be awarded Nobel Peace Prize

  • Eliza Leonida Zamfirescu, first woman engineer

I WILL BE UPPITY

 Today I will be uppity.
Yes, I will be uppity.
Shrill.
Screechy.
Hysteric.
A scold.
A nag.
Haughty.
Shrewish.
Catty.
Bitchy.
On the rag.
Bleeding from my whatever.
Nasty.
Today I will be uppity,
Ambitious and bold,
Intelligent and educated.
Strong and independent.
And I will dare do all this
Even while being a woman.
