Women's Writes

Well-behaved women seldom make history.
— Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

Day 4

Sooner or later, we all meet him. That man with the certain…something. Something needy. Something demanding. Something that keeps us moving to meet all that he expects of a woman. Sooner or later, we learn that we are not superwomen. We do what he wants us to…why? Believe me, I asked myself that for years. I never got an answer. Even after we parted, I could never figure out what it was that made me act so much like the woman I didn’t want to be. Perhaps one day I’ll figure it out. Then I can probably have a lucrative career on the self-help circuit. Until then, a poem about…him. You know…yes, him.

NEVER ENOUGH

 It’s never enough.
Whatever I can give,
I always fall short.
You want more.
More beauty.
More shapely.
More love.
More money.
More me.

 It’s never enough.
All I have is yours,
But I still need more.
Your needs do not end.
I cook.
I clean.
I shop.
I go out to work.
I raise the kids.

 It’s never enough.
When I am worn out
You cast me aside
And find someone more.
Prettier.
Shapelier.
Cuddlier.
Richer.
Younger.

It’s never enough.
I have no more left to give.
I will not let you destroy me.
You must go.
Go to your mother.
Go to your job.
Go to Antarctica.
Go to the moon.
Just go away.
