Women's Writes

Well-behaved women seldom make history.
— Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

Day 15

Tonight I was sitting in my new house, in my new office, staring at a blank screen surrounded by a bunch of boxes. Nothing to write? Oh, not nothing, just nothing that was going anywhere. My prompt books were all packed. I glared at the boxes, wishing they would unpack themselves. The box right next to my computer was labeled ‘prompt books’.. What serendipity! I used the book to find a prompt that inspired me, and here it is. The prompt was Why do you write?

WHY?

 Why do I do this?
Write every day for a month,
A particular month,
The month of March.
Why?

 Because…
I am a woman.
I care about women.
Things are challenging
And someone needs to say so.

 I have stories to tell,
Poems about events or news
Or personal circumstances,
Essays about…
Well, about anything, actually.

 I will continue to write
Every day
For an entire month,
A particular month,
For the month of March
Until…

 Until…
Women get back the right to an abortion.
Women break the glass ceiling.
Domestic violence is no longer such a threat.
There has been a woman president.
Women can wear what they want
Without being labeled sluts, whores, or frumps.
Women can get old without being treated
Like they have committed a crime.
Women make as much as men.
Women in every country have rights and freedoms
Equal to those of men.
Women feel safe in their own homes.
There is no more patriarchy.

 Barring that, I shall write
Until I am no longer able.
